Illness Protocols

Students should remain home for the following:

Fever (100.4°F or above) – Must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning.

Sore Throat or Tonsillitis – May be a sign of a more serious illness; consult a healthcare provider.

Rash or Spots – Stay home until cleared by a provider. For infections like ringworm, scabies, or impetigo, students may return after 24 hours of treatment, with the affected area covered.

Cough or Cold Symptoms – Includes congestion, body aches, chills, and headache. If multiple symptoms are present, consult a healthcare provider before returning.

Vomiting or Diarrhea – Stay home until 24 hours have passed since the last episode.

Eye Inflammation or Discharge – Redness with drainage, pain, or matting may- indicate pink eye or another infection. Students may return 24 hours after starting treatment.

Difficulty Breathing – New or worsening symptoms may signal a respiratory infection; consult a provider.

Head Lice – Students must be treated with appropriate medication and be free of live lice before returning. A school health check will be conducted prior to readmittance.

Acute Pain – Students requiring narcotic medication for pain management should not attend school.

Loss of Taste or Smell – New onset may be an early symptom of viral illness and should be evaluated.

Note: “Symptom-free” means symptoms have fully resolved and the student has been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication.
